What Is Inside the Lava Lamp?

!±8± What Is Inside the Lava Lamp?

The liquid stuff inside the lava lamp is a mystery. The two liquids could be solidified drops of paraffin, mineral oil or petroleum jelly. Isopropyl alcohol and mineral oil, cinnanyle alcohol and benzyl alcohol, ethyl sabicylate and diethyl phthalate. The other substance liquid could be a variety of oil and solvent colors of water. Turpentine and anti-freeze ingredients are used to increase warming of the lava. By using the right proportion, the oil could be made to float in water.

The ingredient inside the lava lamp is proprietary. There are several combinations of elements which gives the final effect. The bulb at its base ensures that the lava is neither under-heated nor over- heated. The ceramic lamp is fastened to a glass cylinder.

Mineral oil floats if water and alcohol is used in correct proportion. Salt and dyes are then mixed with water. Tiny space of about one inch is left at the top to allow the hot liquids to expand; this in turn influences the length or shape of the bubbles. To achieve the perfect lava effect it becomes important to get the right ratio of the two liquids. Improper ratio may cause the water and oil to mix together and not form bubbles at all.

This lamp should never be hated up by any other means, nor should it be cooled down artificially, as sudden changes in temperature could crack the glass. The normal running time of a lava lamp is about six hours daily. In case it is overused or if the room temperature is high it will break up completely into bubbles. If the room temperature is less than 10 degree Celsius, the lamp may not start at all.

The master fluid inside the lava lamp can be easily renewed only when the lamp is cold. The container is glued with gasket to make it leak-proof.
